We performed end-to-end testing of a core smart metering backhaul environment. The client wanted to understand what security exposures existed in the environment, how they could be exploited, and what remediation was needed to reduce risk.

Working closely with the client, we developed a threat model for the smart meter ecosystem surrounding the target environment. By taking a goal-based approach focused on the most likely and highest-risk attacker actions, we delivered a detailed assessment of the environment’s security posture.
The attack paths (sequences of exploitable security weaknesses) found during threat modelling were technically verified from both internal and external perspectives. This included targeted, scenario-based testing that simulated attacker methods against custom hardware, networks, firmware, and radio protocols.
Our consultants identified and verified several previously unknown attack paths, each made up of multiple security exposures, that could have led to full system compromise and significant harm to the client’s business. We worked closely with the client to explain the technical findings, their business impact, and how to remediate them to strengthen security resilience.
Outcome
We provided recommendations to reduce the client’s cyber risk exposure, with a focus on improving the deployment of existing preventive controls and introducing more targeted controls for the attack paths and systems identified.
We also recommended stronger detective capabilities, including use cases that could help identify abuse of legitimate access and processes.
In addition, we advised carrying out an independent assessment of implemented security controls and defining a clear improvement roadmap with activities that would strengthen overall security.
The work helped position the organization as one that takes security seriously and understands the risks in the smart metering ecosystem, supporting its ability to influence security policy and stay ahead of evolving expectations.
